Apparently 5 years ago life would’ve looked very different. Matty Collector had a 5 year plan for their ThunderCats Classic line that launched in 2016. The holiday item for 2020 was going to be the crowning jewel of the line – up to that point. Yes, even Mattel planned to have Cats Lair made. But despite the line’s premature cancellation (remember that tragic day when we were informed of the line’s death even before the first figures came out; or the second blow when Super7 confirmed they won’t be continuing the line), the rewritten timeline still gave us what only +/- 4300 today can say is theirs – an actual playset for this expansive 7″ ULTIMATES! line. SDCC 2024 LED ThunderCats ULTIMATES! Review

There’s an old Roxette song from 1994 that starts with church bells ringing in the far off distance. While the title is Love Is All, there’s a little bit in brackets afterwards – Shine Your Light On Me. It’s the main lyric in the chorus, and the song builds to its full orchestra ensemble climax. When you get there, it really hits you. I won’t lie to you, the song is 6.44 long, but at 4.54 it strikes like lightning, brightening up the sky with a deadly glow. When it rains in Super7’s Thundera, it pours! As I’m writing this, the amount of incoming ThunderCats ULTIMATES! is and has been mindblowing, and it’s easy to get lost in all of this excitement. Wave 10 feels like it arrived just yesterday, and now Wave 11 is here a few weeks later, soon to be followed by the LED Lion-O and Mumm-Ra exclusives and my very own holy grail – Cats Lair (yes mine is a little late; blame on logistics, but so be it.) I often appreciate it when there is a delay in deliveries. It sounds silly, but when there’s a new wave of ThunderCats ULTIMATES! from Super7 incoming, there’s so much goodness in the wave that sometimes characters get lost when you start ranking them based on what’s in front of you. So when they arrive in smaller quantities I get to spend more quality time with each figure, and the appreciation opportunities multiply.

Just when you think the ThunderCats train is slowing down, Captain Bragg puts it into another gear and bam!! Super7 hits you with something new. The DELUXE line, aka DX, came out of nowhere. It just showed up one day early September on Target’s website as a featured preorder for their Fall Collector’s Spot. Needless to say the figures sold out instantly. There was a lot of unhappiness. Then the news came via Brian Flynn as he commented on a post on Instagram that these two figures – a brand new sculpt for Lion-O, and Monkian – will be available, come October, in Target stores nationwide. People breathed a sigh of relief. Well, some anyway.
