Bluegrass ULTIMATES! First Look with ToyBro

Time for another round of space travel with our friend ToyBro, aka Jared Elswick. This time we’re on the bright side of the moon star of Limbo, and of course, that means we are talking about the good guys today: none other than Larry Kenney’s Bluegrass!!! Settle down collectors, it’s time to hear a different side of Lion-O in space, with a cowboy-twist and a hat to boot!

WWMTC: This crime-fighting cowboy is one of two SilverHawks included in this wave, but also the only one to not have wings. Voiced by Larry Kenney, this pilot is finally available to own. Was he ever a favorite of yours?

TB: He definitely was. He always seemed like the one with the most character. The voice, cowboy design and all really worked for me.

WWMTC: While we’re not getting to the more shinier Hawks just yet, let’s hear your thoughts on the paint on this one, as he is the shiniest of the two released in Wave 2.

TB: I think he looks great. There’s a definite sheen on him but he’s also got a decent amount of shading throughout to really accentuate things. I think the color is pretty close to the cartoon as well, it’s blue but not too blue.

WWMTC: He wears a hat. A cowboy hat no less. The hat is removable. Does it fit well on all the heads?

TB: Maybe a little too well, I feel like there needs to be some caution on this hat, I can definitely see it being put on too tight to the point where it scrapes or warps his mohawk, but it definitely stays when it’s on.

WWMTC: Good to note! Talking about the heads, we have three options here too. They are very different but they capture his personality quite well. Are you pleased with how they turned out?

TB: Very. They all not only look very cartoon-y but are fully painted and as you said, definitely capture his personality. The winking face in particular is great, and likely how I’ll display him, but they’re all fantastic.

WWMTC: A while back a sample of Quicksilver was photographed at a booth and it caused a lot of commotion. We now know that it was not the final product, but many people jumped ship because of that. Overall, would you say that the paint on the faces in this wave is spot on?

TB: Absolutely, easily the best examples of painted faces/heads we’ve had in Ultimates. They look like the show, again they’re fully painted, it’s all been done really well with this wave. I’m hoping wave 1 is more of the same.

WWMTC: Now this guy has an array of accessories. We’ll start with the hands. Great choices to pick from. Which ones will be your go-to pair?

TB: I’ll likely have him holding hot licks, so some of the various hands for the guitars. He almost has too many there’s a ton of hands to choose from, a lot of that is thanks to the guitars for sure though.

WWMTC: Two guitars accompany him, one being Hotlicks and the other Side Man. They also have straps. And an accessory that is very impressive: the blast effect of musical notes! I’m not saying the other one is boring, but good grief that one is brilliant. Does it fit onto both guitars? Which guitar will you use to display him with?

TB: I suppose it CAN fit on both but it’s clearly meant for hot licks. I don’t find that it works all that well on either though, at least for me. The way that effect connects along with it’s weight is definitely causing some instability. As far as guitars for dispaly, I’ll probably go with hot licks.

WWMTC: Side Man is also included here in its bird form, two versions I might add. Can they both sit on his arm?

TB: They can. I think the actual “perched” Side Man fits a little better just for size’s sake, but they can both grasp his arm.

WWMTC: He has two different lassos as well, which a cowboy obviously should have. Will this end up in a storage box because obviously there is so much great options to display him with.

TB: For me they will. There isn’t much to do with the wrapped up lasso and the other one is an oddly rigid piece of plastic that doesn’t seem to want to give, so it’ll work for pics but not for my display.

WWMTC: Now if we could only get the Miraj so that he could pilot it… would you be up for it?

TB: After getting the ThunderTank yes and no. I know it’ll be enormous which is becoming more and more a problem for me, but it would be hard to say no.

WWMTC: I’m assuming we’ll hear some tuning next time we talk again?

TB: Keep an ear out, we’ll know soon enough.
