We’re halfway through 2023 and we can finally say that we’ve caught up with SilverHawks ULTIMATES! from Super7 with the arrival of the highly anticipated Wave 1. We recently sat down with ToyBro, our favorite toy reviewer, to talk about Wave 1 and here’s our in depth discussion about the leader of the good guys: Quicksilver!
WWMTC: We can finally tick off our main hero off the list. Quicksilver is here and he is meant to be the Lion-O of this line. Is he?
TB: I think so. Quicksilver looks really good and very much fits in line with the other Hawks so far, he also sort of stands out since his color is unique to him, and he gets the coolest visor too, so he definitely has the leader vibe here.
WWMTC: There has been two big concerns for collectors so let’s address the first one: what is his face paint like? Is it printed like the others from Wave 2? Would you say it matches the solicitation?
TB: It’s definitely not photo printed, but it is definitely improved over what we saw at NYCC when those initial figures were shown in public. So he’s not the best example in the line, but he’s definitely closer to what was originally solicited, but certainly room for improvement just because we KNOW what he could have been based on Steelwill specifically.
WWMTC: Way back there was talk of a possible smiling / third head. Do you think it is still needed here?
TB: Eh, maybe? I don’t know that I’d really use it, just like I probably won’t really use the head that comes with Will. So while it’d be a nice option for folks, I don’t know how necessary it would have been.
WWMTC: The next concern is of course the color of this figure. Now we know that Super7 opted to represent the animation cell here, which is the more muted grey color and not silver and shiny like the chrome toys, but we were told that Super7 is hoping to give us some kind of shine in the form of a pearlescent sheen when you turn the figure. Is it there and how can you describe it?
TB: I think he looks good, I’ve been happy with the finish on the Hawks so far in general. I knew what to expect, and he fits in line with what we got in Wave 2. He’s got some shine, some sparkle to him, he’s not just a flat grey.
WWMTC: It’s been proven time and again that collectors should wait for figures to be in hand rather than to cry wolf based on online photos. Is this the case again or is what we see what we get when you compare it to the original marketing material?
TB: I think it is, for the most part. I think his color is fairly in line with the renders, the biggest offender will be the face. It’s closer than we thought it would be after what we’d seen at NYCC, but the render does look more like him I think. I suspect the sculpt is there, it’s just the paint that’s hiding some of his features that the photo printing would have highlighted had that been used here.
WWMTC: Do these effects just slide onto the top of the tuning fork? Would you say that they fit onto it nice and tight or can these fall off easily?
TB: They stay on pretty well, they just slide onto the end of the fork. The rock blast is a bit heavier, so you’ll need to balance it better but the other 2 are super easy to use, none of them are particularly troublesome. Certainly not like with Bluegrass’s effect.
WWMTC: Hands are plentiful as well this time round with Windhammer. One would of course want to use a gripping hand on the one arm for holding the tuning fork, but which other hand would you use here?
TB: I’ve become quite fond of all these pointing finger hands we’re getting. So unless I end up displaying him with a 2 handed pose on the fork, I’ll use one of those.
WWMTC: Let’s talk about his great sidekick, Tally-Hawk! We have two. Which is your favorite, and do they both sit nicely on his forearm like in the show opening?
TB: I really like both of them, but the one with the wings out is my favorite. They do sit on his arm, but for these particular birds you’ll need to balance them a little better than the birds in wave 2. I also didn’t realize this until after filming, but the heads are meant to be swappable here too, so you can have the mouth open or closed on either figure.
WWMTC: Is he articulated in any way?
TB: Surprisingly yes. Head, hips and knees, if that’s what you’d call them on a bird. I didn’t expect anything to move with him after getting Wave 2, so now I’m curious why there was a change between waves.
WWMTC: How does the wrist remote control fit onto his wrist? Would you say it is durable in terms of the plastic used?
TB: It seems fine to me, I’ve taken it off and put it back on quite a bit at this point and it sits on his wrist snugly but not too tight to scratch the paint, and the panel itself its pretty much in line with what we get for accessories from S7.
WWMTC: His laser beams are another great way to display your Quicksilver figure. Do they also fit snug?
TB: I recall having issues with the beams on Steelwill but for Quicksilver they seem to fit a lot better, could have just been my particular Will that had some problems. But yeah they’re solid. I still think this “power” translates into figure form kind of weird just because it’s so unnatural for something to be shooting out of a shoulder, but they work just fine.
WWMTC: We haven’t touched on the packaging yet, so let’s do that now. What do you like about the packaging?
TB: I love the packaging for these, it’s the chrome. Obviously there’s a joke in here somewhere that the boxes are more silver than the figures, but I love the S7 does the full foiled out packaging, and of course it works great for this line.
WWMTC: Unlike some of the other characters in this line so far, he has less expressive hands. Do you think what we got works for this character? Would you have liked any others?
TB: I don’t really think I’m missing much. Maybe a pointing finger hand would have been nice, but he’s got 8, I don’t really feel like I’m hurting for much more.
WWMTC: He comes with a set of wings to that you can display him with. Is this any different from Steelwill? Do they attach easily?
TB: The wings/arms themselves do attach easily, arms just pop out of the shoulder. The shoulder swapping is still here and it seems better than with Will, but I still have issues getting them to swap easily, so I’m suggesting head anytime folks want to swap those shoulders onto the non-winged arms.
WWMTC: Overall, would you recommend Quicksilver (and the rest of the line) to anybody who is not familiar with the show but do know its connection to ThunderCats?
TB: Considering there aren’t really any alternatives outside of a pricey vintage line and a couple random figures from Ramen Toy, yeah sure, if you’re curious about Hawks this is the line to look into.
WWMTC: We know that Mon*Star appeared in the 2011 reboot, so while we already covered his standard version, will we be talking about the big guy in our next Q&A?
TB: He was going to be first but I had to give the leader his due, so the big guy is next for sure.
