We are back with another Q&A with our favorite toy reviewer, ToyBro, and we’re continuing our discussion of Supery’s ThunderCats ULTIMATES! Wave 6.
WWMTC: We’ll jump right in here with another quick catch up of the new Wave 6 ThunderCats ULTIMATES! collection from Super7. Are you blown out of the water by this Mumm-Ra?
TB: In many ways, yes, I have really fond memories of the vintage figure, so this is the one I was most looking forward to.
WWMTC: Does our eyes deceive us, or is he bigger than the regular Mumm-Ra TEL?
TB: He’s about the same size, there’s a lot of reuse here.
WWMTC: Back in the day there were complaints that that version was too blue, and not greyish/greenish hued enough. Would you say that this is green enough to match the vintage toy?
TB: It might be a little too green, honestly. Both versions seem to be a little over saturated, but I don’t think this so different that it’ll be an issue, it’s not for me anyway.
WWMTC: We finally own his vintage accessories here. Which is your favorite?
TB: Definitely the sword, I love that sword. It’s what I always displayed my vintage Mumm-Ra with so again there’s that nostalgic tug. It’s also nice to get it since while it doesn’t go with the cartoon version, it being on the box was a bit of a bummer that first time around.
WWMTC: Like the vintage toy, his helmet is also removable. Describe the type of plastic used here. And does it feel similar to the vintage one? I know mine didn’t always sit well and fell off easily.
TB: It does have a different feel about it, in many ways it feels more vintage-y if that makes sense.
WWMTC: Do you miss the light up eyes?
TB: Just like with Lion-O, yes and no. It would be cool, I’d love to do it…once. And that’s probably it, I’m not sure it matters if I’d never really use it.
WWMTC: It is clear that the basic body was reused here, and things like his armbands and wrappings are mirrored here. There is, when compared to the vintage toy, one arm band missing on the left arm. Does it really matter?
TB: Sure, it matters. Is it the end of the world? No. I find it odd we’re once again missing an arm band on a figure, and I can’t not notice it, but I don’t hate the figure because of that small error. Still, it’s something that shouldn’t have happened.
WWMTC: Quick check – the pins that holds Mumm-Ra’s cloak on the cartoon version, is it glued in here?
TB: Those are solid this time around, no chance of losing little pegs now.
WWMTC: Does the articulation match the regular version?
TB: Through and through, yes. No surprises here.
WWMTC: Do you miss Ma-Mutt here, the same way that Snarf is missing from that release?
TB: Somewhat. Since we already have a Ma-Mutt it doesn’t seem as important to me, granted that goofy LJN Ma-Mutt would be pretty cool to get in Ultimates, but I don’t know that I feel like he’s missing.
WWMTC: Do you think that we’ll get an oversized Ma-Mutt and Snarf 2-pack in the LJN side of the line one day? Or would you want them?
TB: I’m not expecting it, I feel like once we get Snarf they’re moving on, I don’t see them going back to Ma-Mutt and multipacks seem even less likely these days. Would I want and buy them? Of course.
WWMTC: There was an early prototype of Mumm-Ra with a cloak. Do you think that Super7 should’ve included it here? What else do you think would’ve worked here or are you satisfied with what we got?
TB: I like the idea of the proto cape, but I don’t think its “needed” here. I wouldn’t use it, personally, that’s not how I remember vintage Mumm-Ra. I do think it’d be cool to get the power ring, even if it was non-functional, just for the callback.
WWMTC: I honestly don’t know which head I prefer here. The new one looks like an improvement on the vintage one, while still keeping that same feeling? Which one would you display yours with and why?
TB: I think I’m going to have to go full vintage on this one. I like both, they’re similar but different enough. There’s just something about the goofy expression that does it for me.
WWMTC: I’ve asked this before – do you miss the lever on his back and the “battlematic” action feature?
TB: This one’s kind of a yes and a no. It’s the same as light up eyes, do I need an action feature? No. I’d probably use it a few times and never again. I think the better alternative would have been a non-functional lever just for the callback and visual.
WWMTC: There was a purple variant of Mumm-Ra back in the day in some promotional material. Is this an opportunity you’d like to see taken advantage of in the future as a con exclusive maybe?
TB: Absolutely. I certainly don’t NEED it, but I would love to see that happen at some point. And it screams con or retailer exclusve.
WWMTC: Which is your preferred version of Mumm-Ra? Toy or toon?
TB: Still the toon, but they’re really neck and neck. There’s a lot about both that make for a great figure, not to mention I have some serious nostalgia for both versions, so it’s hard to really make a definite choice.
